Abstract:
This paper examines Multi-annual, Multidisciplinary Research Programmes (MMRPs) instigated by the Netherlands in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The MMRPs were developed in response to a perceived need for a shift in the key responsibilities in donor funded research (eg in agenda and priority setting, the conduct of the research and financial accounting) from the North to the South. The paper examines the success in MMRPs and compares them with other donor-funded research capacity-building programmes in the South. It focusses on seven countries –Tanzania and Uganda in Africa, Bangladesh, India and Vietnam in Asia, and Bolivia and Nicaragua in Latin America.
