The role of farmers and other experts in the development of agricultural technology

This paper reviews the role of farmers and"experts" in the development of agricultural technology. It assesses the Impact of Transfer-Of-Technohgy in different agricultural systems and argues that there is a need for a new approach to technology development, that overcomes the bottleneck of maintaining sustainabil-ity and that will lead to an increase in productivity. It is concluded in the paper that the new approach to technology development should integrate the complementary domains of the indigenous knowledge (IK) and formal knowledge.
