Songo Songo Gas Development & Power Generation Project
/
2003
Abstract:
This is an environmental assessment for the Songo Songo Gas Development Project, which develops and markets natural gas resources in Tanzania. Key negative enviromental impacts and their mitigation measures follow. Project activities will be conducted to avoid affecting mammal species of conservation interest. Where the right of way passes through stretches of ntural vegetation, the project will minimize cutting of trees and offset tree cutting by supporting good forest management along the pipeline corridor. Areas prone to soil erosion will be stabilized after being disturbed. A solid waste management strategy will be implemented to ensure that waste is disposed of in an environmentally benign way. Air emissions will comply with World Bank guidelines. To respond to accidental gas releases, the project will develop and implement an emergency gas leak response plan. In the health area, a strategy for dealing with HIV/AIDS will be developed for the entire project
