Abstract:
Survey results suggest that the most important factor limiting agricultural production in Iringa District is decreasing soil fertility. Recently, there has been an increased interest in the use of organic materials as a source of nutrients for crop production because of the increasing cost of chemical fertilizers. This paper describes the findings of a survey in Iringa District about the extent of the current use of farmyard manure, outlines its nutrient value and the benefits of its use, discusses the constraints that restrict its more widespread use, and suggests strategies for encouraging more effective use of this valuable and widely available resource in future.
