Abstract:
This short article shows how Participatory Communication can prove an invaluable tool for validating community experiences and building solidarity. This is illustrated in the example of the Mtwara Media Centre, in Lindi, Tanzania, which used participatory video to help traditional fishing communities organise themselves and make their case against a Government ban on traditional fishing techniques. In imposing the ban, the government of Tanzania favoured commercial scale, dynamite-based fishing for sale to urban centres and for export.
