Gender Equity in Education and Children at Risk

Abstract:
Issues of Gender equity, children at risk and education are so interconnected that it is often very difficult to address them in isolation. For example, while levels of education and gender equity are associated with the levels of progress and sustainable development of a society, nation or community; education (or lack of it) is also associated with problems of gender inequalities, children at risk and poverty in general (Muganda 1999; 2002). Whereas gender equity would contribute positively to social justice in education and hence sustainable development, gender inequity is a form of social injustice that contributes to the development of children at risk. Thus, issues of children at risk are closely associated with gender inequalities and poverty. It has been noted in Tanzania for instance, that most of the school aged children who are out of school are from poor families and hard to reach communities and girls form a higher percentage of school drop outs before completion of the primary education cycle (TGNP 1999).
