Environmental degradation and poverty rural poverty and degradation in Iringa District, Tanzania

This paper focuses on the relationship between rural poverty and growing environmental degradation in semi-arid parts of Iringa District, Tanzania. The approach is along the lines of a case study as one of the main objectives of the paper is to understand what poverty means in the particular local context. The paper shall not endeavour to get to the bottom of this issue, but the case study approach might allow at least to approach the issue by seeking to include too, the points of view and problems of the people concerned; such attempts to acquire some bottom up understanding of poverty seem essential for any analysis trying to deal with the importance of poverty.
